Antalya – Overview

Antalya is a Turkish city of astounding natural beauty, nestled in the Gulf of Antalya on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Now commonly known as the ‘Turkish Riviera’, the city is the perfect combination of history, culture and nature.

The Antalya region is named after King Attalus, who in the 1st century, sent his men to look for a piece of land that was ‘Heaven on earth’, and they settled here. Antalya was a major city in the Roman and Byzantine empires and later came under Ottoman rule. Today, the city is bursting with archaeological wonders and is rich with historical mysticism.

Antalya is sheltered from winds by the breathtaking Taurus mountain range, with lakes, prehistoric caves and canyons all within reach. Antalya enjoys a Mediterranean climate of hot summers and very mild winters. It basks in around 300 days of sunshine a year, making it an ultimate holiday spot in Turkey and the Med. Swimming, surfing, trekking and even skiing is all possible in this sun-blessed city that caters for all ages and all activities.

Sat on the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean, Antalya’s cuisine consists of the freshest sea foods specialities, such as Grida fish. Traditional dishes from the region include Piyaz, a tahini, garlic and bean mix. Other Turkish dishes are in plentiful supply, such as hamsi (anchovy), pastirma (air-dried beef), or a traditional Turkish kebab or ‘kebap’ in wide variety.

As well as all the natural beauty Antalya has to offer, Antalya has a booming after hours scene throughout the year, and particularly during the summer months. The Marina is a focal point, with a huge selection of bars, restaurants, pubs and clubs to choose from. And if shopping is your style, you will find everything from traditional Turkish carpets or kilim rugs, to the latest in designer fashion.
